Frank Scarola, owner of Frank J. Scarola, Inc., North Arlington, NJFrank Scarola established his company in 1982 and said the paving and excavating business is in his blood and he would much rather be on the work site than in the office. “I love the smell of fresh asphalt!” he said. Scarola’s family-owned company specializes in municipal, commercial and private asphalt paving, concrete work, excavating, drainage and complete site work. He has eight employees and owns his paving equipment along with three heavy-duty diesel pickup trucks.

Q: How did you get started in the business?
Scarola: My father, who passed away when I was 11 years old, was in the paving business. I always knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. In fact, I can’t think of a time when it wasn’t my dream. When I was 22, I scraped up $600, bought a used pickup truck and started my own business. I’ve been going strong for 30 years.

Q: What is your customer-service philosophy?
Scarola: When a customer hires my company, they are hiring me. No matter the size of the job, my name is the company’s name and they get my personal service. I am on the work site and I treat everyone as a No. 1 priority. I deal with the customer directly, show up on the work site and give 100% every day. I believe in treating the customer like I would like to be treated. It’s my mission to make every customer happy.

Q: How do you “own your success?”
Scarola: I believe you get out of life what you put into it. Hard work pays off. I always reinvest in my equipment and in myself. This is not an easy business, but it’s taken care of my family and me and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I can’t wait for Monday morning when I get to go to the job site. If you love your job like I do, you never work a day in your life.
