Contractor Paul MoellerLifelong Virginia resident Paul Moeller is on the verge of celebrating his 20-year anniversary as the owner/operator of Big City Builders in Bristow, VA, a successful construction company that specializes in commercial and residential building and remodeling.

We had a chance to catch up with the 48-year-old Moeller to learn his keys to being successful in the contracting industry.

Q: What kind of commercial and residential work does your company do?
Moeller: We do lots of residential work and some commercial. We focus on building custom homes ranging anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 square feet in size. We service customers all over the Washington, D.C., metro area and Virginia.

Q: What kind of equipment do you use to run your business?
Moeller: We have a mix of equipment. The key pieces are bulldozers, Caterpillar loaders and diggers and Bobcat excavators. We also have a few diesel trucks, like my Ford F-150 pickup and E-350 van, which has about 225,000 miles on it.

Q: How important is equipment maintenance to your business?
Moeller: It’s critical. Think about it, once you pay off a piece of equipment, whether it’s your diesel truck or heavy equipment, the better and longer you can keep that running, the more money it saves you in the long run.

I try to be proactive with maintenance but also try to make smart decisions that will make my life easier.
