"My dad began using Mobil Delvac when he started his company 34 years ago, and I’ve continued in his footsteps. This business is hard on equipment, and we put a lot of miles on our trucks. I carefully research every product decision and continue to rely on the superior quality of Mobil Delvac. We can’t afford downtime, and since we do our own maintenance we chose the highest quality oil."
– Carl Mazzo of Mazzo Excavating, Clarksburg, W. Va.
Carl Mazzo’s great-grandfather started the first Mazzo family business in Clarksburg, W.Va., at the turn of the 20th century. In 1977, Mazzo’s late father started Mazzo Excavating, the construction business Carl now runs with his sister, Melissa Mazzo. They have eight employees and operate five pickup trucks and two diesel trucks. Mazzo says the construction business is in his blood and he loves the sight and smell of fresh turned dirt. “I could never stand being stuck in an office all day,” he said. “I love being outside, working with customers.”
Q: How did you get into the business?
Mazzo: I grew up helping my father with the business and always wanted to join him. When I was in grade school I started taking equipment apart and putting it back together. By the time I was a teenager I could work on any piece of equipment. My father believed you had to know how to service equipment before you were allowed to operate it.
Q: What is your customer-service philosophy?
Mazzo: I believe in doing the job right the first time. I strive to always provide customers with more than they pay for. Treating customers well and offering a safety-oriented, professional work crew results in repeat business and satisfied customers. It’s important to build long-term working relationships with customers while also seeking new clients.
Q: How important is Mobil Delvac to your business?
Mazzo: My dad began using Mobil Delvac when he started his company 34 years ago, and I’ve continued in his footsteps. This business is hard on equipment, and we put a lot of miles on our trucks. I carefully research every
product decision and continue to rely on the superior quality of Mobil Delvac. We can’t afford downtime, and since we do our own maintenance we chose the highest quality oil.
Q: How do you “own your success?”
Mazzo: I believe in leaving no stone unturned in our effort to provide the highest quality service. Appearances are important to the customer. All of our equipment is clean and well maintained, and our workers are neat and courteous. I offer a competitively priced product that’s completed in a timely manner with an emphasis on worker safety. I’m proud of the jobs we do, and stress to my employees that they take pride in the work as well. Our repeat business indicates we are doing what we set out to do.
